Simple Ways to Declutter Your Bedroom | Minimalist Bedroom
How much do you really need in your bedroom? Streamline the space to promote rest and relaxation using these simple tips and decluttering ideas! Once you are able to declutter the excess, you can unlock the minimalist bedroom of your dreams!
Please note that I will be changing the posting schedule for the remaining Better with Less lessons to Mondays and Thursdays. Some of the upcoming lessons require more action steps, so I am hoping that two per week instead of three will prevent people from getting overwhelmed!
Reflection Questions:
1. What is my purpose or vision for my bedroom?
2. What furniture and items in this space align to this purpose or vision?
3. Which furniture and items do not align?
This video was created as part of my decluttering course Better with Less. This was previously a paid course that I created in 2019. I have decided to make the course videos available to everyone on UA-cam. Please note that there may be topics discussed in the video that are no longer available, such as the course Facebook group, live coaching sessions, or personal email support.

I used to have all kinds of books and DVD's in the bedroom but after realizing that I was not going to reread most of the books and I only ever watched the same four DVD's I sold and donated the rest. ( Why there were DVD's with no television in the bedroom is anybodies guess. ) I then got rid of the bookshelves and removed my closet door in order to place my dresser inside. Having done that I only use the dresser surface as a space to fold laundry that I am putting back into the dresser itself. With the room being open I then tackled the inside of the nightstand which now only has two containers to loosely store a few necessary items. The surface of the nightstand now has two plants and a ceramic animal figure that is a sentimental gift. The only other item in the room besides hanging plants is a wooden bench with hairpin legs that has a few trailing plants on it but nothing under it. The only item under my bed is a floor pillow that I pull out for meditating. As for bedding I invested in a really good sheet set and I just wash them once a week and place them back on the bed. Because I live in a warm environment I also invested in a weighted blanket and an all weather organic comforter. My bedroom is easily my favorite room in the house since making it tranquil.

I'm always surprised by how much dust collects under the bed so I don't like to store anything there anymore. A bed with built in drawers underneath might be nice though. I already decluttered my dresser and keep all of my clothing in the closet but they would be great for storing extra bedding because that's one area where I'm a bit of a maximalist. Even though I'm in Canada, we get temperature extremes both ways, not just cold. Therefore, I have 2 light cotton sheet sets, a flannel and fleece set for the colder months, and a light and heavier bedspread. We don't really use blankets but I keep the sentimental ones that my mom and aunt made for me in case of a power outage. On the other hand, my daughter is gifted so many blankets and quilts so I'll have to see if she's willing to declutter any of them. She also has linens for the bed at her apartment as well as her bedroom here and she's moving back home at the end of the month so that number can hopefully be reduced too.

Thanks for the refresher! I got rid of my dresser during the course and haven't looked back. It's wonderful having the open space and not having a surface to collect things. I do have Grandma's rocker but I'm thinking it's time to let it go. She passed away 20 years ago and since I've had it, it collects stuff. I recently started hanging my gently worn clothes on black hangers I already had so I know to wash them after the second wear and that is working. It would be better if I did it immediately after taking them off instead of the rocker being a temporary space.

Thanks Sarah! Instead of just watching, I got up and cleared the peninsula in my kitchen! Now the dishwasher is running with lots of empty containers that had food in them for work and more. Bags are back in the foyer area I created during your course. That makes them easy to put back in the car because they are hanging beside my keys! I recently heard of someone "hushing a room" by removing everything and only bringing back what you need or love. You explained this years ago and I just needed the reminder. ♥

I'll have to think this about this because my young adult daughter is moving back home at the end of the month and her ADHD tendency is to drop her belongings wherever is most convenient. My partner already claimed a section of the kitchen counter for his drop zone and charging station. Our family's main command center works great though. It's just a wall calendar to keep track of work schedules/appointments/events and a small basket with some markers for the calendar plus a notepad and pens and pencils.

maybe my mind works differently but I need to have my decor items on my surfaces because if it's a clean clear surface that's when clutter tends to hang around because it's available space to put it. whilst with decor I try my best to clear the clutter so that it looks exactly how I want it

Good one Sarah 👍 I like clear surfaces for sure. I get easily overwhelmed by visual stimulation so this appeals to me 😊 I see this more when I go to other people's houses and wonder why I'm tense and realised part of it is because of the amount of stuff they have on surfaces, furniture and walls. I have removed surfaces in my space to compliment my need for simple 🙌

This is an important one but a battle I can't win because my partner has ADHD and needs to have all his important items out in the open. I've tried clearing out a top drawer in the kitchen right below his spot on the counter where he drops everything and a tray for a "clutter trap" of sorts but Surrender seems to be the only viable option. He needs a section of counter space for his command center and that's just a reality and compromise I have to accept.

I'm a minimalist in this category because I only have a wallet on a string and no purses or totes or backpacks. I'll still find some things I can remove like proof of vaccinations and some other random papers and cards. Of course, I carried a diaper bag/larger purse when my daughter was a baby/child. I guess I'd just use a reusable shopping bag if I had to carry something big these days.

I have to admit that my everyday essentials has been a process of trial and error as well as going through a "de-influencing" stage. I used to allow myself to get sucked into buying a lot of unnecessary stuff just for the sake of aesthetics or because I thought it would be useful or fun, but the novelty of constantly having new things just gets old after a while. Nowadays, I tend to streamline and organize items based on what I'm doing that particular day. I find that I don't need much whenever I'm out and about doing errands, or even when I attend different social activities. For work, however, I do tend to bring a few more things with me because I like to keep all my bases covered. So far, I'd say that this system is working and that makes me feel happy and satisfied 😊

How to declutter when you dont have your weight stable? I have clothing for at least 3 sizes because of my weight variarions. I also keep smaller favourite pieces in the hope i will fit on them again...advice?

    • @AbundantlyMinimal
      @AbundantlyMinimal 11 днів тому

This is tough since it's also something I am currently experiencing. For me, I don't have exact rules on a specific size, but I am much more strict on what I choose to keep from clothing that does not currently fit. For example, if there is something that I don't love wearing or ended up being a bit lower quality or not very flattering from a different size, I will declutter those. But, I have kept my favorite items that I loved wearing at different sizes so I have them for the future. I hope this helps and I know the challenge!

My partner is the king of this! He makes an interesting concoction for his first breakfast. It has Cream of Wheat, chia seeds, crushed flax, avocado, cinnamon, and more. Second breakfast is a cheese omelet. He almost always has some quinoa prepared for work lunches and dinner. To go with that, he makes a mixture of chickpeas, black beans, corn, salsa, and taco seasoning. Of course, you could switch it up by serving it with rice instead, topping it with cheese, eating it in a taco or as a dip with tortilla chips. My daughter is a vegetarian, so some of our go-to items are things like the Impossible Burger and Yves Italian veggie sausages (either on a bun or with pasta) with a side salad.
